Here is some basic information to help you understand what documents you need to enter Canada.
US Citizens
If you are a US citizen, all you need to travel into Canada is a piece of photo ID and your birth certificate or citizenship card. A passport won't hurt, but it's not required—while the entry requirements between our two countries are changing, these changes won't come into effect until 2007 at the earliest.
Citizens of Other Countries
If you are not a US or Canadian citizen, regardless of which country you're coming from, you will need a passport in order to enter Canada.
Additionally, citizens of some countries are also required to obtain a visitor's visa in order to be allowed in the country. You can find a list of these countries here. Note that Green Card holders do not need a visa.
