The best PHP and DB Conference of 2006 → Saving on Travel to Toronto
If you're coming from the US, Toronto Pearson can be an expensive airport to fly into (on the other hand, if you're coming from Europe, it is often one of the least expensive intercontinental destinations).
Wondering what documents you need to travel to Canada? Check out our Travel Documents page.
Here, therefore, are a couple of tricks that Torontonians have been using for years to save on their flight costs:
- Drive! Toronto is only about one and a half hours from the US/Canada border; if you're coming from upstate New York, driving is often an excellent alternative. The hotel has plenty of inexpensive parking space. Driving into Canada is even easier—you still have to go through customs and immigration, but most often you don't even need to get out of your car (the same applies when you're driving back into the States).
- Fly to Buffalo—Buffalo, NY, is only about a two-hour drive from Toronto. This means that you can fly into Buffalo Niagara International Airport, then rent a car and drive the rest of the way up to Toronto. As strange as it sounds, the combined cost of the flight to Buffalo and the car rental is almost always much less than the cost of a flight to Toronto—and you'll have a car to go around.
- Do a bit of homework—"Major" travel sites don't always list the cheapest fares. You may want to consult a service like Matrix by ITA Software, which shows you the raw data from the airlines (and provides you with instructions on how to book your flight directly with them, thereby saving on the fees that most sites tack on to ticket prices these days). Matrix is free for use (just click on the "Login as guest" link)—and it's saved us more than once.
