The best PHP and DB Conference of 2006 → Welcome to php|works Live → The Great PHP Trivia Challenge
Join us for an evening of great PHP fun on Thursday night at 7:00 PM in the York Halls and you could walk away the winner of a brand new Apple Intel Macbook! The Great PHP Trivia Challenge tests your knowledge of PHP—not just of the language, but also of the community and its major players.
You must pre-qualify in order to participate to this event! Pre-qualification is completely free and consists of a simple ten-question trivia test available here. Remember—you can only submit the quiz once and before 5PM on Thursday; multiple submissions may disqualify you from the contest altogether.
How It Works
In order to participate as a contestant, you will first need to complete a quick ten-question trivia quiz that tests your knowledge of PHP. The contestants with the nine best scores (highest number of correct answers) will be chosen and their names announced on Thursday night at the live event and entered into the final rounds, in which three finalists will battle against each other for the final prize.Light refreshments and drinks will be served throughout the event—so, even if you don't feel like challenging your knowledge of PHP, you can still have a drink on the house and a laugh with your friends.
- The Great PHP Trivia Challenge is open to conference attendees only. Speakers and organizers are not allowed to participate
- In order to qualify for the live round, each prospective participant must first answer the questions shown in the pre-qualifying questionnaire. Each question in this quiz has a value of one point
- Each participant can submit the quiz only once; multiple submissions may result in automatic disqualification from the contest
- Submissions must be received by the organizers no later than 5PM on Thursday, September 14th
- The nine participants with the highest scores will be chosen to enter into the final rounds. In the event that two or more participants will have the same score, their position will be determined by random choice
- The finalists' names will be called on Thursday, September 14th at 7:15 PM. Should any finalist fail to claim his or her spot by 7:25 PM, the contestant with the next highest score will be chosen, and so on until all spots are available; in the event that no more contestants are available to fill a given spot, the spot is considered as forfeited and will not be entered into the game
- The finalists will face each other, three at a time chosen at random, in a final qualifying round of five questions, the contestant that answers the highest number of questions advancing to the final round. Each contestant will then be given the opportunity to reserve the right to answer any given question by means of electronic queueing. In the event that the chosen participant's answer is wrong, the remaining two contestants will be given the opportunity to reserve the right to answer the question by the same means. In the event of a tie between two or more contestants, a tie-breaking question will be asked, and the first contestant to respond correctly will advance to the next round. Should a tie still exist after this last question, a final tie-breaking coin toss will be used to decide the winner of the round
- The final round will take place using a 25-question panel, with each question being assigned a different score. A randomly selected contestant will be given the opportunity to choose a question, which will be read by the host. Again, each contestant will then be given the opportunity to reserve the right to answer the question by means of electronic queueing. In the event that the chosen participant's answer will be wrong, the remaining two contestants will be given the opportunity to reserve the right to answer the question by the same means
- A correct answer will result in the corresponding number of points being added to the answering contestant's total score; an incorrect answer will result in the corresponding number of points being subtracted instead
- If no contestant reserves the right to answer a given question within ten seconds from the time when it has been read by the host, the question is discarded and no contestant is either penalized or rewarded
- At the end of the final round, the host will present a final question, to which each contestant will be given the option of answering and "betting" one or more points from his or her score. If a contestant provides the correct final answer, he or she will be awarded a number of points equal to the number of points he or she had bet. In the event of an incorrect answer, the bet will be forfeited and removed from a contestant's score
- At the end of the final round, the player with the most points will be awarded the final prize, an Apple Intel MacBook. In the event of a tie, a tie-breaker question will be asked, and each contestant in the tie allowed to reserve the chance of answering it first. The first contestant still in the game to answer the question correctly will be declared the winner. If no contestant answers the question and a tie-break still occurs, the winner will be determined by coin toss or equivalent random mechanism
- Out-of-turn answers or abuse of the electronic selection system may result in disqualification from the entire event
- In the event of a dispute over the validity of an answer, the organizers will attempt to confirm its correctness independently and fairly; their decisions will be binding and unappealable
